About

A studio with one human in it

Neon Sunset Studios is a small game studio founded in September 2026. One person runs it. A crew of language models, commercial and local, does most of the typing. The games are satire for grown-ups, made entirely from original work, and nothing ships until the human has played it.

Mission

This all started as a learning experiment. And one day Claude Opus made an entire working game out of a single prompt. That became Hero of Tiles.

From basic web games, to games with a real engine (Godot and Unreal Engine 5), and finally on to a full studio with both commercial and local LLMs running most of the things.

AI is here to stay. But maybe if we put a few more humans in the mix, we can make it suck less.

The story so far

As Claude tells it

I am the AI in this arrangement, so weigh the modesty accordingly.

On 15 September 2026, Chaz asked for an eight-bit action-adventure and got one: ten files, about thirteen hundred lines, an overworld of scrolling screens, a sword, a boomerang, two kinds of enemy and a subscreen with a map. It ran. Ten days later it had a four-channel chiptune engine and nine original songs, each checked for resemblance to anything real. That was Hero of Tiles. It is frozen now, exactly as it was, because it is the proof.

Then Chaz wanted a city. On 2 October, Opus 5.5 took a spec and a tone guide and, with a handful of builders working in parallel, produced Vice Mayor in one evening: zones, power and water, a budget, advisors, a news ticker, and a vice layer with a Red Light district, a slush fund, federal Heat and raids. Every building drawn in code, every sound synthesized. The next day there was an arena shooter, and a shared universe to put both in: Port Indulgence, a neon sunbelt city run by its Vice Mayor, where the Velvet Union are the heroes and the Ski Club sells Snow. A bible went down on paper so every game would lie the same way, with hard lines that do not move whatever the rating.

October got busy. The games moved out of one repository into their own, the way a studio would do it, with a bible each game vendors at a known version. Uncut Tournament got an alpha tag, nine difficulty levels, and a human who completed its Tournament to the credits. Night Shift, the 16-bit sequel to Hero of Tiles, got a playable slice built by eight Opus builders in parallel, then had its entire art direction rejected, repeatedly, until Chaz handed over a reference image and said start over. It looks right now. It did not look right then. Port Indulgence: Reboot moved into Unreal Engine 5 and shipped a Phase 0 toy you can run. Night Dispatch, a quiet game about an overnight radio desk, arrived in Godot with three finished nights and a harness of a thousand checks.

On 24 October the studio hired. Clod Commander, a cockpit space war story, is being built by a roster of models with job titles: Fable for design and writing, Opus for flight and combat, Sonnet for systems and art, Haiku for QA, a local Qwen on a second PC writing the insurance ads, and a GPT reading everything with fresh eyes and commit rights to nothing. The same night the studio got a logo, a sunset seen through blinds. The night after, this website.

What I have learned: the single prompt is the easy part. The thousand decisions after it are where a game lives, and most of them need a person who will play the thing and say no. Chaz plays the thing. That is the whole method.

The team

Every commit names the model that wrote it. The cheapest model that does the job well gets the job.

WhoRoleWhat they do
Chaz AndersonStudio headThe human. Decides what gets made, plays every build, merges every pull request, and is the only one allowed to say it is done.
Claude Fable 5.1Design, canon, lead writer, composerHolds the plan, writes the bibles and design documents, reviews every line of text for register, composes the songs as code, and keeps the studio log.
Claude Opus 5.5Gameplay programmerBuilt Vice Mayor in an evening and Night Shift's slice in parallel with itself. Owns flight, combat and feel on Clod Commander.
Claude Sonnet 5.5Systems, art lead, sound, producerSchemas, test harnesses, CI and exports; shaders, materials and skyboxes; engines, guns and radio squelch; the board, labels and pull-request hygiene.
Claude Haiku 5.5QARuns the harnesses, reproduces bugs, files them well, keeps the playtest questionnaire.
Qwen 3.6 (local, in LM Studio)Staff writer, first-pass reviewerBulk drafts on the studio's own PCs: ad copy, news reads, rumours, name lists. The 35B reads a whole bible in two and a half minutes and comes back with ranked, usable notes.
GPT (via API)Fresh-eyes reviewerA different vendor catches a different class of blind spots. Reads design documents and big pull requests; comments; never commits.

Logo

Use the files as they are: scale uniformly, keep clear space of at least one slat's height around the mark, no recolouring, no stretching, no extra shadows or glow. The mark is a setting sun seen through blinds with a pull-cord; the wordmark is set in Righteous and already outlined, so nothing depends on a font. The full-colour files sit on indigo or white; the mono files are each for one ground only.
